Dissertation Project's Assignment #3

I guess this is the assignment number 3, but I am not sure... Anyhow, this assignment is to answer to the next three questions. I confess that I haven’t spent much time thinking about them, but I tried to answer them anyway.

Who will be the participants on your study? How will they be selected?

The participants of my study will be students from the Communication and Art Department of the University of Aveiro. I will probably choose a convenience sample of students and I assume that I will not be able to extrapolate the data collected to the population.

What data do I need to collect for my investigation?

I need to collect data related to the user’s perspective of the system’s use: their interaction with the system, difficulties they felt, what they wanted/needed to be presented and what really was presented, how they felt about the personal information showed, and so on. It will also be necessary to observe the users in order to gather data about how they interact with the system, so that there can be two distinct perspectives of the same data, so it can be subsequently crossed. I think I might as well need to obtain data related to their motivations of use.

How are you going to collect such data? Which instruments are you going to use?

For the experiment's purpose, I will ask the participants to use the system and execute a list of tasks. During the test, I will be observing them or perhaps I will be filmmng them in order to observ them later (I haven’t decided yet) and I will fill in an observation grid and a performance checklist. When the participants finish the test, they will have to fill in a questionnaire about it.

Next steps:

.I need to make a decision about the methodology of data collecting for subsequent analysis. I know it will be a case study, and I know more or less the data that I want to collect; I know who the participants are; I just do not know what the best way to design the study is.

.I have to think in a way to allow the personal recognition to be made by mobile phone, because everyone has one and it would not be necessary for the user to carry an extra device; (I already have made a list of technologies and I am making some reading in order to understand how they work and how they can be implemented on my project)

Collecting Data

In what is concerned with data collection there are some questions that I need to ask myself before the data collection takes place:

Where to collect the data? The data will be collected at the Communication and Art Department of the University of Aveiro, next to the users when the tests occur.

When to collect the data? The data will be collected in two different moments: during the test, the investigator will observe the users interaction with the system and collect the data observed; at the end of the test users will have to fill in a questionnaire about the system’s use aspects.

How frequently should the data be collected? Every user will only be tested one time, but the data will be collected in tow moments: during the test (data collected by the researcher) and at the end of it (data provided by the user).

By whom should the data be collected? The data will be collected by the researcher during the tests and also provided by the participants at the end of the tests.

How should the data be collected? The users need to be tested on their interaction with the platform by responding to a list of tasks they have to complete. As they are testing it, the researcher is observing their performance of use. At the end of the test, the users will have to fill in a questionnaire about their perspective of the system’s use.

Which instruments should be used? There are two separate types of instruments that will possibly be used: the investigator could use an observation grid and a performance checklist; the users may have to answer to questionnaires.

Project's Implementation

There are some questions that are needed to be answered, but first I will have to share with you the procedures of project's implementation that I will follow.

How to proceed?

First of all, I will develop a system that based on the recognition of user’s personal data, returns information according to their needs/preferences.

Because there can be some issues with obtaining user’s personal data from the University’s Services, there are two possible ways to proceed:

-          .On one hand, I could previously choose a small amount of students that can provide me total access to their personal data, and then I could develop personalized systems for each one of them;

-          .On the other hand, I could develop a single system that covers all the aspects that I want to study but not so personalized as the previous one. I coul assume that constraint and ask the participants to presuppose that some of the generic information showed, in an ideal study, would be personalized.

The first experience should give an important feedback, in order to easily understand questions related with privacy. The second experience could be tested using a considerable user’s number looking to solve those questions of personal recognition and technical procedures. I will need to choose to go one way or the other...

But for now, I will choose the second possibility because I can test a major number of users.
