Desafio Seminário - Entrevista

This post will be written in Portuguese because it is part of an asignment made in class.

Boas.

Human-Computer Interaction Resource

Hello!

I have been really busy the last weeks but today I have got a few minutes for myself, so I thought it would be nice to read some papers and make some developments in what is concerned to my dissertation.

While I was looking for some interesting materials I found a very helpful Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Research Group from the University of Stanford – Stanford HCI Group. The researchers from this group are “dedicated to advancing the field of human-computer interaction.” Their research themes include “ubiquitous computing, novel interaction techniques, tools for enhancing designers' creativity, and rapid prototyping tools.”

Fortunately, these researchers are very kind and they provided a list of their past and current projects which can be found here, and it can be very useful for case study matters.

But the thing that I loved the most was that they have provided access to the entire video lectures of the Human-Computer Interaction Seminar.

Some lectures are about one hour long so I guess I will spend the next weekend watching them.

Hope this resource was helpful. I expect to give you some news about my dissertation's project really soon.

Farewell.

Assignment #5?

Hello!

After a really hard day, I am too tired to write this post, but I could not disappoint you, so here is the answer to this week’s assignment.

Previous Note: Read Ricardo’s post before reading this one, because he already gave some examples of personalization of information related to Interactive Public Systems.

My work: Providing Personalized Information based on a Personal Recognition’s System connected to (and presented on) an Interactive System - PontoDeCA.

So, the question is:

How can your project be used for business purposes?

Some examples:

MEDIUM or LARGE COMPANIES

A Personalized Recognition’s System connected to an Interactive Display could be useful because:

-          - If the firm has an elevated number of services/departments this kind of system may be useful to avoid that recent employees get lost in the company’s immediacies. How? If the company’s identification card has data related to his/her office post, and if the firm possesses several Interactive Systems at some points of the building, when the employee is detected some information about his/her position can be shown and a itinerary to his/her working station could be marked;

-         -  If the ID Card has some information about the employees schedule it can also show information about the menu of the nearest canteen or the prices of the nearest cafeteria when the worker is detected by the system;

-         -  If the ID Card could have information about the employees’ meetings, if they were detected near the time of the scheduled meeting, the system could not only warn them but also indicate the route to the destination where the meeting will occur;

  I think that a system like this could facilitate and improve the life conditions at work, but of course there is one giant obstacle to this kind of systems: the workers may feel that they are being tracked along their way and that drives to important questions related with their privacy.

SHOPS/STORES

A Personalized Recognition’s System connected to an Interactive Display could be useful because:

-         -  If the costumers have a shopper-card with information about the things theyI have previously bought from that store, when they were detected by the system, it could provide them information about where to find things that could be related (or in case of clothing, things that match) the ones they have already bought;

-          - If the store had a system at the shop-window the costumers wouldn’t even need to enter it, because when the system detects their cards, based on the description of the things they have bought before, it could assume what their tastes are like and give them suggestions about similar things that are inside the shop, along with the prices so that the shoppers could be able to enter the store and buy the things they need/want without spending much time finding them;

-          - If the shoppers have ordered a product, they wouldn’t have to wait to talk with someone responsible in order to obtain information about it. Instead, based on the order's code registered on the shopper-card, the system would provide them information about the situation of their orders even before they entered the store;

You can also find other examples of this kind of use in areas like:

TOURISM

MUSEUMS

EDUCATIONAL ESTABLIHMENTS

HOSPITALS

RESTAURANTS

CONFERENCES/FAIRS

...

I can imagine infinite scenarios where a personalized recognition’s system connected to an interactive display could be useful and facilitate the life of:

-          Clients

-          Costumers

-          Patients

-          Tourists

-          Visitors

-          Students

-          Teachers

-          Doctors

-          Politics

-          Shoppers

-          Employees

-         ...

In conclusion: I know this kind of systems are strongly connected with problems about the user’s data safety and privacy, this is one of the major topics of discussion, and there are different perspectives about this issue, but despite that, wouldn’t it be great to have all the information we need, brought to us without making any efforts?

I can imagine myself at the train station hearing something like this: “Hello Marília, your train is at terminal number 4 and leaves at 20:30pm. Your seat is the number 28 of the 21st carriage. The ticket’s price will be charged automatically from your account. Thank you and have a nice trip.” This would be much better than waiting hours in the line to buy one ticket home... :)

Feel free to imagine the possibilities… and give me some feedback with your opinion about it or about privacy issues. I will be glad to know your points of view!

Farewell.
