Project's Definition

Hello!

As promised, here are the latest project’s updates. This is a work in progress and everything written has an enormous possibility of being out-of-date.

Feel free to ask any kind of question about the project. I will be glad to receive feedback.

Context:

The project will be developed at the University of Aveiro, and it will be tested with a small group of users (students), so that some inherent variables of the study can be controlled.

Problem:

The University of Aveiro is composed by several departments and services located at different buildings. Due to this fact, the university’s community faces some serious problems of understanding where those departments and services are located. To aggravate this problem, there is not a place where all the information is properly gathered in order to help the community to find their way in the campus.

Project:

The project’s aim is to develop and conceive a locator’s system for buildings (departments and services), which will work similarly as an interactive kiosk. This structure will also be combined with a personal recognition’s system, allowing users to obtain personalized information related with university’s services, departments, places or events, according to their needs and preferences.

Two separate perspectives:

The main project is composed by two distinct components: one related to the interactive terminal and other associated to the personalization of the user’s interaction with the platform. Although I feel comfortable with the two perspectives, the second one appears to have more interesting features that merge with my personal motivations. Thereat, I only intend to develop and study the personal recognition’s system and the issues related to the exhibited information’s personalization. The other component of the project will be assured by Ricardo.

What to study:

In what way a personalized recognition system will help the students into their diary route in the campus?

In which way the presentation of personalized information will interfere with privacy issues?

How to conceive a system that allows users to obtain personalized information according to their needs and preferences? What variables are needed to be considered to achieve it?

How can I guarantee that the presented information really meets the user’s needs/preferences?

Does a personalized system that returns information according to the user’s needs/preferences can motivate users to exploit the system?

So..this is all for today, maybe tomorow I will post something new. :)
